Planning Notes

Three Rules Worth Remembering

Allow 24 Inches Per Guest

The standard for comfortable dining is 24 inches of table length per person. Going to 26 or 28 inches is worth it for larger chairs or long dinner parties.

36 Inches of Clearance Per Side

Leave at least 36 inches from the table edge to the nearest wall or piece of furniture. That's the minimum for pulling out a chair fully. 42 to 48 inches allows guests to walk behind seated diners.

Size the Room for the Leaves

If you choose an extension table, plan your room for the fully open configuration. A table that extends from 84 to 120 inches needs a room that can handle 120 comfortably.
