Above them an oval of open cane fills the back, framed in beechwood under a soft gray oak wash. The cane is painted to match the frame, so the chair reads in one pale tone from across a room.

Each chair measures 21 inches wide and 24 inches deep with a seat height of 19 inches, sized for everyday dining rather than hall duty. The seat is upholstered in a taupe fabric that sits a shade warmer than the frame, which keeps the pale wash from going cold. The open cane back means a run of six never builds into a solid wall across the room.

Gray oak and taupe suit a room already working in pale timber, plaster and linen, and they take a painted table as easily as an oak one.
