Nailhead trim runs up the outside edge of the back on these oak Parsons Dining Chairs, a line of small studs tracing the shape from the seat rail to the top corner. Everything else is plain: a fully upholstered back and seat in cream, four straight legs in dark brown wood, no arms, no carving and no contrast welt anywhere. The studs are the only ornament and they do all of the work.

The chair is 21 inches wide and 18 inches deep, which is shallow for a dining chair and useful in a room where the table already takes most of the floor. Six will push in under a standard rectangular table without their backs projecting into the walkway behind. The plain seat takes daily use, and the flat back sits close against a wall when the table is pushed aside.

Cream upholstery on dark oak legs is the safest contrast in a dining room, sitting equally with walnut, oak and painted furniture. Use them with a dark timber table so the legs echo the top, or with a pale plank table where the cream carries instead. The shallow depth also makes a single chair useful at a desk or a console in a hallway that cannot take anything deeper.
