Borrowed from Paris cafe seating, the saltire brace across these Bistro Dining Chairs is doing structural work rather than decoration, stiffening the bent birch frame the way it has since the 1860s. Here the frame is finished in black, which sharpens the crossed lines against any wall color, and the bentwood curves stay smooth from the crest rail down through the back legs.

The seat is natural cane, left unstained, so the honey tone plays against the dark frame. The chair measures 20 inches wide, 22 inches deep, and 35 inches high; the chair tucks fully under most dining tables and weighs little enough to move one-handed. That lightness matters in a kitchen where chairs are pulled out and put back several times a day, and the narrow frame lets a spare one wait against the wall.

Black bentwood and honey cane belong in a room that wants pattern without color, so they sit well with a scrubbed timber table, a marble bistro top or a painted kitchen island.
